Independence High School welcomed Dr, Courtney McMullen to all College & Career Readiness classes today. Dr. McMullen, the Director of Associate Nursing at NWCC, is a 2004 graduate of Independence High School. She explained the numerous duties of a nurse in addition to the types of nursing certifications. As a "hands-on activity", Dr. McMullen allowed several students to use a stethoscope and allowed several to wear gowns needed when treating a highly contagious patient.

Jayden Glosson and Townsend Keizor fished the North Ms Youth Anglers Tournament at Pickwick Lake this weekend. They caught several bass but were not able to beat the Pickwick Lake 15 inch bass slot limit to pull out a win. We are proud of all of their hard work and the dedication they are showing by getting up at 4 am for blast off and fine tuning their skills for their upcoming State Competition at Sardis Lake May 30th. Good luck to our Indy Anglers!

Levert Jernigan, a trooper with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, recently spoke to all three College & Career classes. Trooper Jernigan explained C.O.R.E., a tool being used to recruit young people to join the MS Highway Patrol. He also presented the history of our highway patrol in addition to the benefits of being a highway patrolman.

Justin Boop, a commercial truck driver, spoke to all three College & Career classes recently. Mr. Boop explained the requirements necessary to become a commercial truck driver in addition to the duties of a commercial truck driver. He also emphasized the advantages, including being able to travel and be compensated at the same time.

Juliana Dickey recently asked Mr. Harris if he could arrange for her to job shadow again at East Tate Elementary, this time with third graders. He arranged for Juliana to job shadow in Ms. Teresa Harris’s class and Juliana is seen here leading students in an educational game of Bingo.

Sybil Canon and Al Canon, both of them having a career in music, recently addressed our band at Independence High School. They described their experiences in the field of music and noted that being in the high school band is like being in a family. More importantly, Mr. and Mrs. Canon explained that being a good band member means commitment and encouraged all band members to stay committed. Thank you, Mr. Harris, for inviting the Canon’s to our school.

Petty Officer Alyssa Weatherall, a recruiter for the U.S. Navy, recently set up a lunch table during “Where 2 Wednesday”. Petty Officer Weatherall was able to visit one on one with a number of students to discuss the U.S. Navy as a career.

Addison Lindsey is interested in veterinary medicine and asked Mr. Harris if he could help her gain some experience. He arranged for her to job shadow at the Cat & Cow Veterinary Clinic located in DeSoto County. While at the clinic, Addison was able to assist Dr. Lynn Worley with a number of animals, one being a Ragdoll cat.

Tecarri Porter recently expressed to Mr. Harris her interest in the study of law. To provide Tecarri legal exposure, he arranged for her to job shadow at the Tate County Court House. Tecarri was able to attend sessions of both Circuit Court and Chancery Court in addition to spending time with clerks representing both of these courts. At the Circuit Clerk’s Office, Tecarri was assisted by Keeba Adams and while in the Chancery Clerk’s Office she was assisted by Emily Taylor, a 2005 graduate of Independence High School.

To ensure your masterpiece can be printed professionally, please follow these rules strictly:
1. KEEP IT FLAT
Because these must be scanned flat for printing, please do not glue anything onto the paper.
• NO glitter, macaroni, cotton balls, or pop-up elements.
2. SIZE & SHAPE
• Use the official template for hand drawn submissions. 
• Use 4x6 size if using Canva or other design programs.
• Landscape orientation (horizontal/sideways) is preferred!
3. ORIGINALITY
All work must be 100% original. Please do not include copyrighted characters (like Marvel, Disney, or cartoon characters).

Independence High School welcomed Daniel McDowell, a licensed plumber, to all three College & Career Readiness classes. Mr. McDowell discussed the qualifications and experience necessary to be a good plumber and presented various tools, fittings, joints, and pipes used in the plumbing industry. He also allowed several students the opportunity to demonstrate using these tools.
